The GIF background remover makes one background color transparent in every frame of an animated GIF. It estimates that color from the four corners of the first frame, so one covered corner does not throw it off, or you click the preview to pick the color yourself. A tolerance slider from 0 to 255 decides how close a pixel must be to count as background. GIF transparency is on or off for each pixel, so the result has hard edges with no feathering. That makes this background remover for GIF files a fit for logos, stickers and plain-screen clips, not busy photos.

Use this GIF background remover when the backdrop is one flat color. For a GIF that is too large afterwards, the GIF Compressor or GIF Resizer is the next step.

Corner detection reads the four corners of the first frame and takes the middle value, which works when the background touches the edges.

How the color key works, where it falls short, and what it costs.
A GIF background remover makes the backdrop of an animated GIF transparent so the moving subject can sit on any color. This one uses a color key: one chosen color, plus shades within your tolerance, turns clear in every frame.
The GIF background remover is free to use with no account and no credits. Your file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.
For a white backdrop, the GIF background remover works best when the white is flat. Leave corner detection on or click a white area, start at the default tolerance of 30, and raise it slowly until the edges look clean.
GIF transparency is 1-bit: a pixel is either clear or solid, with no partial opacity. Soft, anti-aliased edges from the original background therefore become a hard outline, and the tool does not feather them.
Busy scenes are where a color key cannot help. The GIF background remover is not designed for photo backgrounds with many colors or gradients; it also removes subject pixels that share the background color.
Photoshop lets you mask each frame by hand, which suits complex scenes but takes time and a paid license. This GIF background remover applies one color key to all frames in the browser, so it fits flat backgrounds, not detailed masking.
Each GIF can be up to 20 MiB, 120 frames and 1600 px on its longest side, with up to 12 million pixels across all frames. The output can be up to 40 MiB, and processing is cut off after 60 seconds.
